Railroads in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania, a state in the Middle Atlantic Region of USA has a long and eventful history. It had always been one of the most progressive states of the US. The Railroads in Pennsylvania had been established in 1846. in was a branch of the American Railroads, which had been codified as PRR. The Railroads in Pennsylvania, PRR had been the largest railroad in America, whether in terms of traffic or in terms of revenue. Throughout the 20th century, the Pennsylvania railroad had also been one of the largest publicly run corporation, in the whole world. The PRR, often referred to as “Pensy” has its headquarters in the state capital of Philadelphia.

At a time, when the Pennsylvania railroads was at the pinnacle of its successful run, it controlled about 10,000 miles of rail line. During the time of its existence the Pennsylvania Railroad merged with about 800 other railroad companies. The glorious history of the PRR can be guessed from the fact that, the budget of PRR used to be greater than the budget of the federal government of USA. Moreover, the president of PRR was considered to be even more powerful than the president of United States.

The Pennsylvania Railroads stopped existing individually, as they merged with their rival, the New York Central Railroad, to form a new railroad company, the Penn Central Transportation. But several factors led to the bankruptcy of the company and it was divided among Amtrak and Conrail.
