The Philadelphia International Airport is the largest airport in the Delaware Valley region. Situated in Philadelphia, it is the 10th busiest international airport in the world, in terms of handling air traffic. Unlike many other airports, the Philadelphia International Airport is located within the boundary of the city proper. Only a portion of the international terminal and the western end of the airfield are located in Tinicum city of Delaware county.

The Philadelphia International Airport had its beginning as many other airports of America, as a base for the US Army. The site where the present airport is situated was previously known as Hog Island. This site acted as a training ground for the pilots of the Pennsylvania Air National Guard. In 1927, the site was renamed as Philadelphia Municipal Airport. There was no terminal in the airport till 1940. after the construction of the terminal four airlines namely, American, United, Eastern and TWA started functioning from the Philadelphia International Airport. The Philadelphia Municipal Airport was renamed into Philadelphia International Airport in 1945 when the American Overseas Airlines started operating flights to Europe from this airport.
The Philadelphia International Airport presently acts as the biggest international hub for the US Airways and operate flights to Canada, Caribbean, Europe and Latin America. Presently, it is also the hub of the low cost carrier Southwest Airlines. The concentration of low cost airlines in Philadelphia International Airport has led to its rapid development.
