Located in the York County of Pennsylvania, the township of Hellam is famous for its unique architectural landmark, the Shoe House. Originally built by the shoe magnate Colonel Mahlon M. Haines in 1948, the Shoe House is a 48 feet long, 17 feet wide and 25 foot high stucco replica of a high-top work boot. Besides a sole, heel and toe, the Shoe House has three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen and a living room. Built as a publicity gimmick, the Shoe House attracted thousands of visitors from the nearby areas. Every corner of the Shoe House abounds in shoe décor, ranging from the shoe shaped mailbox in the front to the shoe shaped doghouse at the rear. The front door frame of the Shoe House sports the portrait of Haines holding a pair of shoes in stained glass medium. Located near the Hellam exit off U.S. 30, the Shoe House is a popular landmark in the York County. Every year, visitors from various corners of Pennsylvania visit Hellam to visit to the Shoe House.
