The park flora and fauna of Salt Spring State Park is truly unique. The park is the abode of some massive hemlock trees that are more than 500 years old and are some of the largest trees in all of Pennsylvania. One of the key features of the Salt Spring State Park is a gorge with three waterfalls on Fall Brook. Salt Springs State Park is of about 7 miles north of Montrose and is just off Pennsylvania Route 29. The park is one of the few state parks in Pennsylvania that is not under the hegemony of Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. It is instead looked after by the non-profit Friends of Salt Springs Park.
The entire park is open to hunting, except for the 30 acres which is kept as a nature preserve in the Fall Brook Gorge area. The common wild life in Salt Spring State Park ruffed grouse, squirrels, turkey, and white-tailed deer which are allowed to be hunted. However the hunting of groundhogs is prohibited. Fishing in Salt Spring State Park is also quite popular. Fall Brook and Silver Creek are the two areas which are designated as trout fisheries by the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. Salt Springs State Park also has 8 sites for out door activities like tent camping and 3 cottages that are available for rent on a weekly or nightly basis.
