Delaware Canal State Park

If you want to take a stroll into American history then a visit to the Delaware Canal State Park is what is a ‘must-do’ in your list. This 60 mile towpath is the only remaining continuously intact canal of the great towpath canal building era of the early and mid 19th century. The new attractions in the Delaware Canal State Park are the mule drawn canal boat rides and the Lock Tender’s House Visitor Center.

Parallelling the Delaware Canal State Park between Easton and Bristol, this diverse park contains an historic canal and towpath, many miles of river shoreline and eleven river islands. From riverside to farm fields to historic towns, visitors to Delaware Canal State Park will enjoy the ever changing scenery along its corridor. In the early 1800s, America was growing rapidly. During this time canals provided a better way of transporting natural resources to urban areas. The completed structure of Delaware Canal State Park helped to develop the anthracite coal industry in the upper Lehigh Valley. These canals provided a convenient and economical means of transporting coal to Philadelphia, New York and eastern seaboard. With the advent of time as railroads became more efficient means of transporting goods, it became increasingly difficult to profitably operate canals. The last paying canal boat through Delaware Canal State Park completed its journey on October 17, 1931.

The wide variety of environmental and interpretive programs in Delaware Canal State Park is varied. Guided walks and evening programs make the participants gain appreciation, understanding and develop a sense of stewardship toward natural and cultural resources. The Delaware River Canal offers unique, one hour journey aboard a replica canal boat drawn by a team of mules on the Delaware Canal through historic New Hope and into the scenic Bucks County countryside. For recreation at Delaware Canal State Park which is one of the popular Pennsylvania Parks, there is option for fishing. You may also visit the trail for a walk, jogging, bicycling, cross country skiing and bird watching.
