Underground Museum

While visiting Philadelphia, Pennsylvania you should drop into the different museums where finest specimens are preserved to provide an insight to the present generation about the histories of the region. The Underground Railroad Museum of Philadelphia is located at 1805 Pine Street near Rittenhouse Square in the heart of Philadelphia. This unique museum was founded in 1888 by the ex- officers of the Union Army, Navy and Marine Corps. It is one of the oldest American Civil War institution in the the entire US. This museum is dedicated to the life and works of Major General George Gordon Meade who was a commander of the Army of the Potomac at the Battle of Gettysburg.

If you ever step into the Underground Museum, apart from the Gordon Meade room you will find several other rooms dedicated in the fond memory of other war veterans viz., John Fulton Reynolds, Ulysses S. Grant and George Brinton McClellan. Currently the Underground Museum of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania has plans to relocate to the First Bank of the United States building which would be near Independence Hall. This is going to take place within some years latest by 2010. For its relocation the museum is collecting funds from all sources.

On going inside the Underground Museum you will find display of a large collection of military arms and other war weapons that were made in the United States during the Civil War. You also get to know about the details of using these weapons in the war and all about its manufacturing. There are also collection of items that belonged to Abraham Lincoln, including a lock of hair, and a death mask that are the most popular items among the tourists.
