Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh is the second largest city of Pennsylvania and also acts as the county seat of Allegheny county. The city is built on the confluence of the Allegheny and the Monongahela rivers. These two rivers join to form the Ohio river. The city of Pittsburgh is more famous for its skyline than anything else. The skyline of Pittsburgh has about a hundred and fifty skyscrapers, moreover, Pittsburgh also has a total of 446 bridges, which is an amazing number for a single city. For this reason, the city of Pittsburgh, is often referred to as the “bridge capital” of USA, or even the “city of Bridges”. Pittsburgh is one of the major cities to have influenced the economy and culture of the entire Ohio Valley Region. History of Pittsburgh:

The first European settlements in the region was established in the year 1710. the French attacked the Ohio valley with an aim to connect Louisiana with French Canada via the river. This ;led to a battle between the British and the French, which was headed by George Washington. The French succeeded in constructing fort Duquesne. During a later battle the Britishers conquered the fort and ordered the construction of Fort Pitt, based on the name of William Pitt. From this very name was derived the name of the city, Pittsburgh. The city had a long history of industrialization. During the war of 1812, the cutting off of British goods, in a way forced the development in the production of American goods. During this time, Pittsburgh played a very important role. The economy of Pittsburgh received an impetus during the American Civil War due to the production of iron armaments. Gradually, the city of Pittsburgh changed its economic pattern from manufacturing industries to service and tourism based industries.

Geography of Pittsburgh:

The city of Pittsburgh is locate in the Allegheny Plateau at the point of confluence of the Allegheny and the Monongahela rivers. The downtown area lying at the confluence of these rivers is known as the Golden Triangle.

The city of Pittsburgh is also an major tourist destination of Pennsylvania, the bridges, buildings and the natural beauty of the city attracts hordes of tourists ever year.
