Philadelphia

Philadelphia, is the largest city of the state of Pennsylvania. It is one of the most important cultural commercial and educational hubs of the United States. The city has a glorious past and had been the first capital of United States, in the 18th century. It was also the second largest city in the British empire. In the early days of America's independence, Philadelphia held a more powerful position than New York City and Boston. The seeds of American independence had also been sown in this city. As a result of its grand past, Philadelphia has been a witness to many upheavals in the history of USA. The grand buildings of the past has now been transformed into places of interest for tourists. Before the arrival of the Britishers, the city of Philadelphia was being resided by a Native American tribe, called the Lenape or Delaware tribe. The first foreign settlements were founded here by the Dutch, followed by the Swedish and the British. William Penn was gifted a piece of land by Charles II, which he transformed into the present state of Pennsylvania. The first city to be established in this region was that of Philadelphia. William Penn being a quaker,had announced that anyone who believed in God could reside in this city. He named Philadelphia so, as the name signified brotherly love. The city was originally designed to resemble a English township. Due to the central location of the city, Philadelphia was used during the American Revolution for holding the First and the Second Continental Congress. The Declaration of American Independence was also signed in Philadelphia.
