Allentown is one of the most important cities of Pennsylvania as well as of the entire United States. Located along the banks of the Lehigh river, the city is the most important one in the entire Lehigh Valley region. The city is the third most densely populated city of Pennsylvania after Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. Allentown acts as a County seat of the Lehigh County. The two smaller cities around Allentown are Easton and Bethlehem. The city is located centrally between New York City and Philadelphia, two of the most important cities of the USA. History of Allentown:
The city had its beginning in 1735, when it was established by William Allen and was named as Northampton Town. William Allen was an influential personality, who was the mayor of Philadelphia and also the chief Justice of the Province of Pennsylvania. The city was named after its founder in 1883 as it had long been called by that name by its residents. Allentown was famous as it was the house of the famous liberty bell. The liberty bell was hidden from the Britishers in Allentown, during the American Revolution. The American Industrial Revolution originated in this city of Allentown. With the establishment of the Lehigh canal, the economy of the city received an impetus which led to the industrialization of the city. The major industries that made Allentown so very prosperous were the railroad and iron industries. Besides these, Allentown waas also famous for the breweries of beer that it housed.
Geography of Allentown:
The city of Allentown is located along the banks of the Lehigh river, in the Lehigh Valley. It spreads across an area of about 47 square kilometers. The city has a humid continental kind of a climate, which is affected by the Blue Mountain. Another mountainous region of the city of Allentown is the South Mountain.
