Pennsylvania Wilderness

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which is situated in the Middle Atlantic area of the United States of America, was covered with forests in the beginning. But these forests of Pennsylvania were not well maintained when the first settlers of this region arrived. But now the forests and wilderness of Pennsylvania are well looked after by the Pennsylvania Bureau of Forestry in order to curtail the pressure on the ecosystem. The Bureau also play a significant role in protecting some rare plants and species of animals which are on the verge of extinction. The Pennsylvania wilderness now serves as a major economic resource of this particular state.

It helps in bringing good economic returns to forest products industry, and acts as a source of employment for the people inhabiting the region. The state forests which cover 2.1 million acres of Pennsylvania land also produces some valuable timber of the world. Apart from these, the forests offer numerous scopes for entertainment and delight. Tourists from different parts of the country arrive here to to enjoy the flora and fauna of Pennsylvania wilderness.

The forest system of Pennsylvania is demarcated into 20 forest districts. Each and every district takes prior prevention to save the state forests from fire and destructive pests. All the districts have separate offices which are managed by separate district foresters. It is the duty of these foresters to administer timber and habitat management, to meet the tourists' recreational needs. There is a tree nursery managed by The Bureau of Forestry, Pennsylvania. Every year, this tree nursery produces about one million tree seedlings which are sold for the reforestation purpose.

Cornplanter State Forest, situated in Pennsylvania Bureau of Forestry District #14, is named for Chief Cornplanter of the Seneca Nation. The principal office is in North Warren in Warren County, Pennsylvania. The Cornplanter State forest was created due to the forest depletion in pennsylvania in the mid to late 1800's. Neighboring State Forest Districts include Susquehannock State Forest (east), Elk State Forest (southeast), Kittanning State Forest (south).

The National Park Service has regarded the Cook Forest, which is near the Allegheny National Forest, as a National Natural Landmark. Cook Forest State Park which occupies 7,182-acre, is in Northwestern Pennsylvania and has collossal white pines and hemlocks. The Clarion River , which is in the east of the Park, is known for canoeing and rafting. You can go there with your family and enjoy.
